GREEN MEETINGS CERTIFIED VENUE
ICC Belfast is proud to be the first conference venue on the Island of Ireland to earn the Green Meetings Gold certification through Green Tourism. This achievement highlights our commitment to sustainability and our active role in developing a sustainable tourism plan aligned with Belfast’s Resilience Strategy. Our efforts are further supported by a city-wide Green Tourism initiative, funded by Belfast City Council and implemented by Visit Belfast.
The award further enhances Belfast’s burgeoning reputation as one of the most sustainable destinations in the world – having reached number ninth in 2024 in the Global Destinations Sustainability Index. The city is the island of Ireland’s most sustainable tourism destination with seventy five percent of the city region’s 4,800 hotel rooms now officially accredited by Green Tourism.
Sustainable initiatives
ICC Belfast promise to reduce your environmental footprint by improving energy efficiency, advancing waste management, and sourcing sustainable materials.
Energy and Emissions
Most of the lighting in the venue has been upgraded to energy-efficient LEDs and use PIR technology, which automatically switches lights on when entering a room and automatically turns lights off again leaving. Currently, over 60% of the venue's electricity is sourced from renewable energy. Additionally, solar film has been installed to reduce heat loss in colder months and limit solar gain in warmer weather.
Waste Management
Our waste management strategies are critical to the achievement of targets to reduce waste tonnage year on year with zero waste going to landfill. We've also implemented new segregated bins and liquid-only bins to facilitate efficient recycling and minimise contamination in our waste streams. Over 85% of waste is recycled and over 75% of food is sourced from local suppliers.
Water Consumption
Five hydration stations are located around ICC Belfast, promoting reusable water bottles and eliminating single-use plastic.
These stations not only enhance the health and wellbeing of our staff and visitors but also encourage the adoption of reusable water bottles, contributing to waste reduction.
Exhibitor Waste Management
We collaborate with event organisers who have waste management policies in place to help minimise event waste and support sustainable practices. Our venue provides access to dedicated exhibitor waste bins, specially designed to encourage efficient recycling and reduce landfill waste.
Toilet refurbishment
In 2024, ICC Belfast refurbished eleven washrooms improving cubicle partitions, vanity units and ISP systems, installing innovative, modern and long-lasting solutions.
This refurbishment not only enhanced the customer experience but also aligned with ICC Belfast's commitment to inclusivity and diversity.
Farm to Fork Hospitality
ICC Belfast is the only venue in Northern Ireland to have achieved ISO 20121, an internationally recognised standard for the events industry that aims to improve the sustainability of event-related activities, products, and services.
ICC Belfast’s hospitality partners earned this recognition through their strong focus on using local produce and have taken their commitment to “farm to fork” traceability right down to sourcing organic mushrooms grown in home-made compost. Their drive for food tracing, low food miles and sustainability goes as deep as the soil the local produce is grown in.
Sustainable Events
ICC Belfast is committed to welcoming clients and event organisers with a focus on sustainability. Recognising the growing importance of environmentally responsible events, we take seriously our role in reducing our carbon footprint. As a leading venue, we prioritise delivering positive outcomes for our clients, our community, and the environment through a comprehensive sustainability strategy.
In October 2024, ICC Belfast proudly supported the Sustain Exchange Summit, an event that convened leaders from diverse organisations across various sectors to explore actionable solutions for addressing the climate crisis. The summit featured John Elkington, alongside a host of world-class speakers including acclaimed writer and broadcaster, Lucy Siegle, serial change-maker and environmentalist, Chris Hines MBE and UN Committee member, Eimear Manning.
