Key takeaways from The Meetings Show 2024
The Meetings Show 2024 took place last month, and I was delighted to join thousands of event professionals and industry specialists at ExCeL London for this leading exhibition for the business events sector. This was my first time attending, and the excitement at the event was infectious as thousands of buyers and nearly 700 exhibitors from around the world connected with each other across two days of learning and networking.
Representing ICC Belfast on the 'Meet in Ireland' stand, I was delighted to join 24 other tourism companies from the island of Ireland, including Tourism Ireland, Fáilte Ireland, Tourism Northern Ireland, and Visit Belfast.
The tourism companies at the Meet in Ireland stand participated in around 750 commercial meetings and the resounding message was clear for anyone who spoke with #TeamIreland on the stand: ‘Meet in Ireland for your next business event.’ I was fortunate to connect with lots of overseas buyers, DMCs and event planners to discuss and promote business events in Belfast and Northern Ireland.
This year's programme was designed to inform, inspire, and empower event professionals to think, connect, plan, and live differently. The line up of speakers covered a wide range of topics including marketing trends, security, AI, and sustainability. It was clear, even as someone relatively new to the industry, that this annual event had something for everyone.
Here are my three key takeaways from The Meetings Show 2024:
1. Zero-waste focus for events industry
Sustainability remains a top priority in decision-making processes within the meetings and events industry. From eco-friendly venues to sustainable practices, the emphasis on reducing environmental impact is stronger than ever. Industry experts are dedicated to implementing green initiatives and supporting sustainable options.
Attendees and organisers were excited to see the world’s first zero-waste stand made entirely from event waste carpet. This innovative project was a collaboration between creator Paradigm and partners isla, The Bulb, Informa, and The Meetings Show. The stand's walls and floor were constructed using Reform, a revolutionary recycled plastic tile made from old exhibition carpet, with flooring crafted from post-consumer ocean plastic using renewable electricity in the UK.
2. Accessibility must remain a top priority
Exploring strategies to enhance event inclusivity became a reoccurring conversation during my appointments. Ensuring easy access from conference venues to airports and surrounding hotels is crucial for a seamless delegate experience. Efficient transportation options and strategically located accommodation enhance the overall convenience for attendees, making accessibility a key factor in venue selection.
As a new and upcoming destination, it’s exciting to showcase just how accessible Belfast is for any visitor. Located in the heart of the city centre means that ICC Belfast is accessible on foot, by public transport or car, making the delegate journey here quick and seamless.
3. The importance of personal connections
The Meetings Show is where ideas thrive, and connections flourish. In an age dominated by emails and Teams calls, there's something truly unique about sitting across from someone, sharing ideas, and building relationships. These conversations spark magical moments and remind us of the importance of personal connections when doing business.
My participation in this year’s show was enriched with meaningful interactions. Meeting key contacts face-to-face reinforced the importance of direct interaction, making me feel more connected to the event and enabling business opportunities that I don’t believe would have been possible online.
